A brilliant, sad, suspenseful story telling the story of two women, Layla and Mariam. I really loved this book, though it was quite hard to read in places - the traumatic events that take place in the book are absolutely heartbreaking. This is a beautifully written, fantastic novel.

This book was immediately engrossing. The character of Mariam initially drew me in and then as her story progressed I became equally invested in Laila and Tariq.
Set against the background of the troubles and rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan the book offer a small insight into what life may have been like. It's traumatic, emotional and harrowing in parts but ultimately uplifting and definitely worth the emotional investment.
