The Life of Elves

‘An enigmatic and beguiling fairy tale … Barbery explores the mystical connections between nature, art and the human heart with vividness and clarity’ New York Times

One autumn night, a small village in Burgundy is astonished by an unseasonable snowfall. On that same evening, a baby is found in the woods: the dark-eyed Maria, who has an uncanny ability to communicate with the natural world. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in the mountains of Abruzzo, another foundling is discovered. She is named Clara, and will grow up to display an incredible talent for playing the piano.

But a time of great danger is coming, with the fate of mankind held in the balance. Though the twelve-year-old Clara and Maria know nothing of each other, they share a unique bond. Are they the longed-for saviours destined to bridge two worlds? Will their alliance thwart the evil gathering at their gates? And will they be strong enough to unite the natural world and allow harmony to prevail?

Muriel Barbery is the author of two previous books including The Elegance of the Hedgehog, the phenomenal international bestseller which sold over 6 million copies worldwide and was shortlisted for the 2010 IMPAC award.
