With Clonclyfrau/Chatterbooks just launching in Wales, Erica Neck tells us about running her first Chatterbooks session for the Mountain Ash Chatterbooks Group:
We decided to start up the Chatterbooks group after attending training and we thought it might be a fun way of getting children to expand their reading habits. Although our library is popular with children, they usually just go onto the computers and take books out when their class visits. I want to be able to show the children that reading can be fun as well.
It was the first time I had ever done a group like that, even though we do an adult reading group and storytime. I was nervous – I was hoping that some children would turn up! It was great, we had 6 come to the first group and they were really excited. We did Jeremy Strong. I gave out wordsearches and we used the computers to look up his website and answer questions on a quiz, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
We have also freed up some space on a notice board which we will design up for the group and the children can advertise their group and hopefully they will feel more comfortable about using the library and expanding their reading habits. Our next book will be Grim Gruesome by Rosalind Kerven.
